I don’t watch “Jay Leno’s Garage” as much as I should. The question should probably be, “Why not?”

Needing no introduction, Jay is properly known as the consummate Car Geek. He is also, by all accounts, one of the nicest people in the hobby, if not the world. The vehicles he features on his series run the gamut, and even if you’re not a fan of the subject you can’t help but be taken in by the knowledge and enthusiasm.

A special treat for me is when Jay is driving his feature car or bike around the greater Los Angeles area and we get to see cool street-parked cars in the background. In the image above we can see a BMW 2002 – not that odd, even in today’s L.A. – and a BMW E21 3 Series pickup truck, which is certainly not usual.

I can’t find the screen-grab now, but somewhere I have an image of this M3-styled Baur TC2 – it’s actually a 323i – parked on a random SoCal city street.

We’ll be looking for more of these in the future. Stay tuned!

I only watch Jay when it’s one of his cars, and it was built before 1940.

His pieces with newer cars are so cringy to me and you can tell he doesn’t care nearly as much. Plus his adjectives and praise get repetitive .

When he talks about the really old stuff, you can immediately tell it’s what he’s passionate and knowledgeable about. That video on the Deu senburg was great.

Repetitive. Who does it better, Leno or Doug?

I tend to agree. When he brings in someone from a company to show off their new product, you can tell it’s Comcast mandated advertising, and he does his best to seem interested, but is going through the motions. But, when it’s a car from his own collection, not only does he know the whole backstory and every nut and bolt, but you can tell how passionate he is.

Also, every car themed reality show and YouTube channel covers supercars to death, not many people are doing in depth videos on Duesenbergs.

I don’t find Jay particularly funny, But as car guys and girls, he is our king.  Respect where respect is due.

I don’t know about the BMW, but the episode on the Duesenberg was awesome. They really had advanced tech for 1928! Twin overhead cam, 4 valves per cylinder. 278+ horsepower. The most powerful engine ever produced until the Hemi in the 1950's. Freaking amazing.

I like both, but you can definitely tell he’s much more enthusiastic about his own cars.

While visiting some friends stationed at Edwards AFB, one of the husband’s pilot buddies was telling us about driving his Viper on Angeles Crest and on one Sunday, Jay pulled up alongside him at one of the turnaround spots in his Carrera GT And asked this guy to follow him; Jay left him in the dust lol. You gotta respect him for driving everything in  his collection and not letting It sit.

Its insane to think that the Model T (with all of 20hp and a top speed of maybe 45mph) was still the most common car on the streets when the Duesenberg Model J debuted. The T had just recently stopped production (though Ford was still making new T engines, and would continue to do so for another 12 years) and the 40hp Model A (which could just barely touch 65mph for brief periods, but was not at all happy doing so) had just recently debuted and quickly became the top seller on the market.

Probably going to get heat for this one, but box flares are really ugly, especially on E30s and E21s.

I think I know a few things about it from Curbside Classics but also Baur Spotting. But, sure! Always good to hear about another Baur (we have a 1985 323i).

I haven’t seen any of those either because I don’t care, but his dry-roasting of this conman trying to sell customized Fisker Karmas for $1.3 million is something to behold.

Kinda wish he was more like that with the Toyota Land Cruiser guy he’s brought on twice, who seems to know almost nothing about the vehicles he claims to be selling and restoring (I suspect it might be because the particular vehicles he brings on are brand new to him and he hasn’t spent time to familiarize himself before heading over to Jay’s garage). Although, Jay does seem to ask a lot of really specific questions in those videos, which may be intended to either trip him up or see how far he’d go in lying to sound knowledgeable .
